Bhutan is set to participate in the 67th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) 2026, marking the country’s third consecutive participation in the world’s most prestigious mathematics competition for secondary school students.
Bhutan first participated in the IMO in 2024, demonstrating the Ministry of Education and Skills Development’s commitment to nurturing mathematical talent and promoting excellence in STEM education.
This year’s Bhutanese delegation comprises four students and two teacher leaders, who will join participants from more than 100 countries. The students earned their place through the National Mathematical Olympiad Programme, which identifies and nurtures talented young mathematicians from across the country.
Prior to the departure, the delegation paid a courtesy call on the Hon’ble Minister and Dasho Secretary today. During the meeting, Lyonpo and Dasho congratulated the students and encouraged them to approach the competition with confidence, determination, and integrity while proudly representing Bhutan on the international stage. They also expressed their appreciation to the teacher leaders for their dedication and commitment to mentoring and preparing the students for the competition.
Bhutan’s continued participation in the IMO reflects the Ministry’s commitment to strengthening mathematics education, fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and providing gifted students with opportunities for international exposure.
Participation in the IMO not only enables students to compete alongside some of the world’s brightest young mathematicians but also inspires greater interest in mathematics and promotes excellence in STEM education across the country.
