26 youth including 8 monks and 2 nuns from 13 youth centres across Bhutan took part in the Youth Centre Chess Championship for Beginners organized by Programme and Youth Coordination Division of the Department of Education Programmes in Thimphu on January 24.

The participants are among the 306 youth (201 boys, and 105 girls) including 58 monks and 14 nuns, who attended chess coaching sessions held as part of the championship in 2024 at the youth centres.

Tenzin Zepa, 15, from Changjiji Youth Centre won the Championship while Tobden Singye, 14, representing Mongar Youth Centre won the runnerโ€™s up title. Thinley Penjor, 16, representing Bajothang Youth Centre won the best male player trophy while Choki Wangmo, 16, from Khasadrapchu Youth Centre won the best female player title.

Sonam Deki, 23, from Mongar Youth Centre won the best player from the nuns category and Tandin Tshewang, 16, representing Zhemgang Youth Centre won the best player trophy from the monks category. Jamyang Sherab, 12, from Changjiji Youth Centre was the best player from the age category of 10-13 years. Jamyang Cheki Loday, 16, representing Samdrup Jongkhar Youth Centre won the best player title from the age category of 14-17 years and Kinley Gyeltshen, 18, representing Gelephu Youth Friendly Integrated Service Centre won the best player trophy from the age category of 18-24 years.

Research shows that playing chess from an early age can help children and young people build self-confidence while enhancing their planning and organizational skills. Sports have long been recognized as an effective tool for engaging children, including the most marginalized, offering opportunities to improve physical health, socialize, develop leadership skills, and have fun.

Recognizing these benefits, the Programme and Youth Coordination Division in collaboration with Bhutan Chess Federation and UNICEF Bhutan conducts youth Centre Chess Championships to promote professional chess among youth. The event was supported by UNICEF.
