More than 200 children and adolescents, including nuns, monks and children with disabilities, gathered at Changlimithang Stadium in Thimphu yesterday to celebrate the International Day of Play.

Held under the theme “Protect Play, Protect Childhood,” the event was jointly organised by the Ministry of Education and Skills Development, the Bhutan Football Federation (BFF) and UNICEF Bhutan. The celebration called for strengthened, coordinated, and sustained investment in safe play environments, as well as increased opportunities for physical activity in schools and communities.

Addressing the gathering, the Education and Skills Development Lyonpo emphasised that play is one of the greatest gifts of childhood. Lyonpo noted that play not only brings joy and happiness but also contributes to physical well-being and strengthens friendships.

The celebration also served as a platform to raise awareness on the need to protect children’s right to play and to ensure that safe, inclusive, and accessible play spaces are available for their holistic development.

Schools across the country also marked the day by organising various engaging games
