In a heartfelt tribute to teachers, thousands of people gathered at the Ugyen Wangchuck National Stadium in Bumthang on May 2 to mark National Teachers’ Day. The occasion holds special significance as it is also a tribute to the Birth Anniversary of His Majesty the Third Druk Gyalpo who is widely honoured as the ‘Father of Modern Education’ in Bhutan for his transformative vision in shaping the country’s education system.
The celebration brought together 400 teachers from Bumthang schools including retired educators in recognition of their unwavering dedication to nurturing and guiding the country’s youth toward a better future.
The Hon’ble Lyonpo for the Education and Skills Development Ministry graced the special occasion as Chief Guest alongside esteemed dignitaries.
The day began with a warm ceremonial welcome where teachers were presented with Tashi Khadars, traditional scarves presented as tokens of respect and goodwill. A series of vibrant performances, interactive games and the much-anticipated nationwide lottery draw held exclusively for teachers added to the festive spirit of the event.
A highlight of the day was the demonstration of hydro rockets, an educational tool that uses water as a propellant presented by students from Jakar HSS. They also showcased innovative smart technologies such as an obstacle detector for individuals with vision impairments, a smart city and sound sensors which highlighted the potential for technology to improve lives and accessibility.
The celebrations were not limited to Bumthang; the schools across the country also held special programs to pay tribute to their teachers.
Since its inception in 2003 in Thimphu, National Teachers’ Day has become a prominent annual event that celebrates the enduring dedication and contributions of our teachers.
To make the celebration more inclusive, the annual celebration will rotate across Dzongkhags allowing every Dzongkhag an opportunity to host the event and honour their educators. The next celebration is expected to take place in the east.
