Coinciding with the National Zorig Day, the second National Skills Competition concluded yesterday with the Hon’ble Minister for Education and Skills Development presenting awards to the winners.
Winners in each category were honoured with trophies, certificates and cash prizes with the gold medalists receiving Nu. 100,000, silver medalists Nu. 70,000 and bronze medalists Nu. 50,000. According to the Department of Workforce Planning and Skills Development, the winners will get an opportunity to showcase their skills on a global platform such as WorldSkills Asia which attracts top participants from across Asia.
During the competition, forty-nine participants including 45 males and 4 females demonstrated remarkable skill and creativity in seven categories of trades such as Metal Arts and Fabrication, Lhadri (Painting), Bricklaying/Masonry, Patra (Wood carving), Plumbing, Jimzo (Sculpting) and Mobile Application Development. They were guided and evaluated by 21 skills experts in alignment with WorldSkills Asia standards.
Addressing the event, Lyonpo highlighted the importance of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as a “smart and essential path” for today’s youth. She added that in today’s rapidly changing world, skilling is not just an option, it is a necessity for self-reliance and national progress. “Investing in skills is investing in Bhutan’s future,” she emphasised.
Held under the theme “Mindful Innovations and Skills That Fuel Nation Building,” the event marked a significant step forward in Bhutan’s efforts to promote vocational skills and craftsmanship among youth.
It was organised by the Department of Workforce Planning and Skills Development with financial assistance from the World Bank’s PforR and the Asian Development Bank’s Pathways for Emerging Skills and Jobs Project.
