The Ministry of Education and Skills Development signed a contract with a Bhutanese scholar, Dasho (Dr.) Sonam Kinga to develop a series of Bhutan History textbooks for Classes VII to XII. The contract was signed by the Education Secretary and Dasho Sonam Kinga.
The initiative, guided by the Royal Kasho, aims to strengthen school education while grounding learning in Bhutanese identity, values, and national aspirations.
Dasho Sonam Kinga is a well-known and respected Bhutanese scholar and historian. He is the author of several works on Bhutanese history and governance and has been actively involved in national initiatives such as Desung and Gyalsung, reflecting his deep engagement with Bhutanโs civic life and historical consciousness. He is also a World Fellow at the International Leadership Centre, Yale University.
By commissioning a single expert to develop the full textbook series, the Ministry aims to ensure a coherent and unified historical narrative across grade levels while maintaining academic rigor.
The textbooks will be aligned with the National Curriculum Framework, informed by Cambridge curriculum standards, and designed to present Bhutanese history through perspectives rooted in culture, tradition, and lived experience. These textbooks are not only about learning the past, they are about strengthening national identity, nurturing critical thinking, and enabling young Bhutanese to engage confidently with the world while remaining grounded in Bhutanese identity.
