The Ministry of Education and Skills Development and Cambridge University Press & Assessment today marked a significant milestone in Bhutanโ€™s education reform journey with the formal alignment of the Bhutan National School Frameworks to Cambridge standards.

The Chief Executive of Cambridge University Press & Assessment, Mr. Peter Phillips, presented the Certificate of Alignment to the Honโ€™ble Minister for Education and Skills Development, Lyonpo Yeezang De Thapa.

The curriculum reform was initiated in keeping with the Royal Kasho on Education Reform, which calls for a transformation of Bhutanโ€™s education system to equip students for the future while preserving the countryโ€™s values, culture, and identity.

The certification affirms that Bhutanโ€™s curriculum frameworks for key stages across English, Mathematics, Science, Economics, Digital Technology and Innovation, and other core subjects meet Cambridge criteria for technical quality, curriculum coherence and academic rigor.

The alignment follows an extensive process of review, mapping, and quality assurance jointly undertaken by Bhutanese and Cambridge experts. Over 100 curriculum developers and teachers participated in technical workshops and training programmes, strengthening national capacity to sustain ongoing curriculum reform and innovation.

This achievement lays the foundation for a globally benchmarked education system in Bhutan and paves the way for the introduction of a joint Bhutanโ€“Cambridge certification for Class X and XII students by 2027.

The Ministry and Cambridge University Press & Assessment will continue their partnership to develop new textbooks, align Bhutan Professional Standards for Teachers with Cambridge practices, build teacher and curriculum developer capacity, introduce Cambridge A-Level programmes in selected schools, and strengthen assessment practices and accreditation of the BCSEA Class XII board examination. Emerging areas of collaboration include digital learning, STEM education, pedagogical innovation, and joint research.

This milestone marks a major step toward providing Bhutanese students with a world-class education that is globally relevant and distinctly Bhutanese.
