As part of the Ministry of Education and Skills Developmentโs efforts to enhance educational infrastructure across the country, Samtengang Central School under Nyisho gewog in Wangdue is receiving a significant facelift through renovation and new construction.
The renovation works have been completed for the key facilities including classrooms, hostels, labs, a multipurpose hall, an administration block, staff quarters and the dining hall.
As a part of the new facilities, the school will have a futsal ground, an integrated block, staff quarters, toilets and a mess store, all of which are expected to be completed by September 2026.
Currently, the school serves 658 students including 280 boys and 378 girls, of whom 541 are boarders. It has a staff strength of 71 comprising 43 males and 28 females.
According to the principal, the school plays a crucial role in providing education to children from gewogs such as Nyisho, Phangyul, Kashi, Bjena and Rubesa.
Once fully completed, the school will be able to accommodate over 900 students, a significant increase from the current enrollment. In addition, the improved infrastructure is expected to significantly enhance the quality of education, promote the holistic development of students and offer a conducive working environment to educators.
The construction project is being implemented by the Ministry with technical assistance from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport and financial support from the Government of India Project Tied Assistance (GoI-PTA) under the 13th Five-Year Plan.
On September 26, the Honโble Lyonpo visited the school to monitor the progress and understand the challenges. During the interaction, she emphasised the importance of maintaining construction quality and standards to ensure the long-term sustainability of the infrastructure.
Established in 1998 and spanning 22.58 acres, the school is one of the 22 pilot schools for the Bhutan Baccalaureate affiliated with the Druk Gyalpo Institute.
