Children in the Kingdom of Bhutan will have greater opportunities to explore innovative ways of learning through hands-on activities using technology, programming and robotics after it was announced that the FIFA Foundationโs Digital Education Programme will be launched in the Himalayan country.
During an online ceremony, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed by Tshewang C. Dorji, Secretary of the Bhutanese Ministry of Education and Skills Development; Ugyen Wangchuk, General Secretary of the Bhutan Football Federation; and Mauricio Macri, Executive Chairman of the FIFA Foundation.
โAs we have already seen in South America, Central America and Africa, the Digital Education Programme goes far beyond simply introducing technology. It is about empowering educators and learners, providing creative methods that open the door to new opportunities, foster problem-solving, and strengthen inclusion. Today we are delighted to launch in Asia and look forward to seeing the results over the coming years,โ said Mr Macri.
The Digital Education Programme is one of many ways in which the FIFA Foundation uses football to generate a positive social impact.
Previously launched in Belize, Mauritania and Paraguay, the programme brings football and technology into classrooms, providing teachers with practical tools and hands-on activities to make everyday lessons more engaging and meaningful.
Over the next three years, the groundbreaking programme will be rolled out in every primary school across Bhutan โ more than 400 in total โ and over 77,000 students will eventually benefit.
The project will be facilitated by leveraging the countryโs existing digital infrastructure and strong vision for digital education, supported by an investment from the World Football Remission Fund, which comes under the auspices of the FIFA Foundation.
The investment will support the three-year implementation across the country and will focus on supplying robotics kits to all schools, providing teacher training and accompaniment.
The aim is to promote digital skills and foster computational thinking, creativity, collaborative work and problem-solving amongst pupils living in a vulnerable context.
Speaking about the link-up, Mr Dorji said: โThis partnership between the Ministry of Education and Skills Development, the FIFA Foundation and the Bhutan Football Federation is about more than technology or football โ it is about creating meaningful, joyful learning experiences that prepare our children to thrive in a rapidly changing world.โ
As for Mr Wangchuk, he added: โThis project will go a long way towards making the lives of our youth much easier. This MoU marks a significant step for Bhutanese football in making a difference to our youth โ not only on the pitch, but off it too.โ
