To strengthen Non-Formal Education (NFE) in Bhutan, the Ministry of Education and Skills Development today launched a program to distribute laptops for NFE instructors.

The initiative is a response to enable instructors to transform their teaching practices, incorporating multimedia resources, interactive content, facilitate efficient use of NFE-MIS and personalised learning approaches. With these tools, instructors can better address the diverse needs of their learners, making education more engaging, effective and accessible.

The laptops were procured on a cost-sharing basis under the theme, “Preparing Digital Citizens”. Fifty percent of the laptop cost is supported by Korean National Commission for UNESCO (KNCU) under the 2024 Bridge Bhutan project while 50% is borne by instructors.

Through the program, a total of 94 laptops will be distributed to instructors across the country.

As a part of the launch, eight instructors from Thimphu Thromde received their laptops from the Hon’ble Education and Skills Development Lyonpo.

In her address, Lyonpo said that investing in technology for NFE Instructors is a crucial step toward building a more equitable education system, one where every individual, regardless of geographic location, socio-economic status or background has the chance to realise their full potential. She mentioned that the instructors need to explore professional development opportunities, collaborate with peers and stay updated with the latest educational trends and resources. This will not only enhance teaching capacity but also raise the quality of education for the learners they serve.

Tsheten Wangchuk, an NFE instructor at Jigme Losel with over 20 years of experience, welcomed the initiative. He highlighted that digital tools like laptops are essential for delivering timely and effective services, especially in today’s technology-driven educational environment.

According to records, around 300 NFE centers currently operate across the country with 291 instructors who cater to 2856 learners including 544 male and 2312 females.

Meanwhile, the Ministry is also exploring a similar laptop initiative for teachers, further reinforcing its commitment to improving access and advancing digital transformation in the education sector.
