Bhutan hosted its first-ever International Hackathon from June 25-27 at Dungkar Dzong in Paro marking a significant milestone in the country’s digital transformation journey.
Held under the theme “Developing Decentralised Applications Powered by Bhutan’s National Digital Identity,” the event brought together national and international innovators to develop groundbreaking solutions using the country’s blockchain-based National Digital Identity (NDI) platform.
During the program, a total of 13 teams including three international teams developed various innovative technologies to enhance public service delivery while keeping user privacy safe. They presented their final Minimum Viable Products (MVPs) related to land, rental management, forms, compliance system, digitisation and certificates on June 27.
The team DeepGov and team CyberChain emerged as the winners for their innovative use of NDI while the team NGN and team FormBT bagged the title of ‘Potential Teams’ for their promising prototypes. The applications were judged based on three key criteria: relevance to the theme, innovation and originality, and execution and design.
The hackathon was more than a competition; it served as a valuable platform to explore practical and innovative applications, build a global decentralised technology community and offer a hands-on learning experience to developers and students with guidance from global experts.
The Hon’ble Lyonpo for Education and Skills Development graced the closing ceremony alongside Dasho Secretary of the Government Technology (GovTech) Agency and guests.
The event was organised by the GovTech and the Ethereum Foundation underscoring Bhutan’s commitment to emerging technologies and inclusive digital development.
