The second National Skills Competition commenced on May 8 at Thimphuโs Clock Tower marking a significant milestone in promoting Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as viable career paths.
Held under the theme โMindful Innovations and Skills That Fuel Nation Building,โ the event aims to establish transnational skills competition standards, prepare youths for international competitions, promote hands-on learning through competitive spirit and inspire the youths to pursue TVET.
This yearโs competition brings together 49 participants including 45 males and 4 females from diverse backgrounds including TVET graduates, industry professionals and trainees. They will display their innovations and craftsmanship across a range of skill categories such as Metal Arts and Fabrication, Lhadri (Painting), Bricklaying/Masonry, Patra (Wood carving), Plumbing, Jimzo (Sculpting) and Mobile Application Development.
The event will conclude on May 12 coinciding with National Zorig Day, a day that celebrates the countryโs 13 traditional arts and crafts. During the closing ceremony, participants will present their final works and top performers will be honoured by the Honโble Lyonpo for Education and Skills Development.
Each categoryโs winners will receive certificates and cash prizes of Nu.100,000 for the first position (Gold), Nu.70,000 for the second position (Silver) and Nu.50,000 for the third position (Bronze).
The Ministryโs Department of Workforce Planning and Skills Development, is organising the event with financial assistance from the World Bankโs PforR and the Asian Development Bankโs Pathways for Emerging Skills and Jobs Project.
The competition not only celebrates individual skill and innovation but also underscores TVETโs growing role in building a skilled workforce crucial for Bhutanโs sustainable development particularly in light of transformative national projects like the Gelephu Mindfulness City where skilled trades and innovative minds will be key drivers of development.
