The Hon’ble Minister for Education and Skills Development, Yeezang De Thapa visited Helsinki in Finland from March 31 to April 1 to explore Finland’s globally acclaimed education system. The visit aimed to strengthen educational collaboration between Bhutan and Finland by drawing insights from Finland’s emphasis on equity, quality and innovation.
A key focus of the visit was enhancing Bhutan’s Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) framework by adopting Finland’s play-based and holistic approach. The Ministry plans to integrate successful Finnish models into teacher training, professionalization and curriculum delivery to improve education quality in Bhutan. Lyonpo emphasised the Ministry’s commitment to advancing digital education by exploring Finnish EdTech solutions, leveraging AI-driven learning methodologies and strengthening the Education Management Information System (EMIS) for data-driven decision-making.
To formalise and deepen this collaboration, Lyonpo expressed Bhutan’s openness to launching pilot initiatives and facilitating expert exchanges. These efforts will reinforce long-term cooperation in educational development between the two countries.
During the visit, Lyonpo met with H.E. Mikaela Nylander, State Secretary to the Minister of Education and engaged with key stakeholders including officials from the Ministry of Education and Culture, the Finnish National Agency for Education, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, HEI Schools and Eduten. The discussions provided valuable insights into best practices that could inform Bhutan’s education reforms.
