Yangchenphug HSS wins 2023 Bhutan Higher Secondary School ChampionshipYangchenphug Higher Secondary School (HSS) emerged as a winner of the 2023 Bhutan Higher Secondary School Championship (Football) after defeating Chukha Central School with a score of 12-3 during the final match held at Changlimithang Stadium in Thimphu on October 13. The champions received a cash prize of Nu.300,000 along with a trophy while the runners-up were awarded Nu.200,000 and a trophy. Kinzang Tenzin, a player from Yangchenphug HSS was recognized as the tournament’s most valuable player. The tournament which commenced in April featured 80 teams from various schools across the country. It was organized at the Dzongkhag, regional and national levels. Out of the initial 80 schools, 19 teams were selected to compete nationally. Only eight HSS teams made it to the championship finals which started on October 8. The finals were hosted to celebrate the 12th Royal Wedding Anniversary of Their Majesties. On the day, the UN Bhutan and the Bhutan Football Federation launched the “Football For The Goal,” a game-changing initiative to promote sustainable development. It aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals focusing on four key themes including health and wellbeing, protecting children and youth, gender equality and women empowerment, and climate action. The championship was a collaborative effort organized by the Scouts and Sports Division under the Department of Education Programmes and the Bhutan Football Federation with support from the Dzongkhag/Thromde Administrations and Higher Secondary Schools. It is held annually to encourage widespread participation in football at the grassroots level and enhance the quality of youth football competitions in a professional manner.
