Bhutan’s Badminton stars gear up for South Asia Junior Championship 2023
A group of eight young athletes from Bhutan is gearing up to participate in the Badminton South Asia Regional Junior Championship 2023 which is set to kick-off from August 18-22 in Kathmandu, Nepal.
Athletes were selected through an open National Junior Badminton Championship 2023 held at Thimphu in July. A total of 51 boys and 25 girls participated in the championship representing schools including Dagana, Lhuentse, Samtse, Thimphu, Haa, Paro, Wangdue and Pemagatshel.
According to the Bhutan Badminton Federation, the selected athletes underwent intensive training at Thimphu between August 7-11 to enhance their skills and strategies and build their physical endurance for the championship.
Prior to the tournament, they were trained at the South Asia AOP Regional Training Camp in Nepal which provides valuable guidance and exposure to help young players excel on the international stage among other skills. The camp serves as a significant stepping stone for these young players to explore their potential in the world of badminton.
Bhutan’s participation in the prestigious tournament under 17 and under categories not only showcases the talents but also symbolizes the country’s commitment to nurturing and supporting young athletes. As the championship unfolds in Kathmandu, the Bhutanese athletes will have the opportunity to display their growth and earn further accolades on the international stage.
The championship is being organized by Badminton Asia and hosted by the Nepal Badminton Association at the National Sports Council in Tripureshwor, Kathmandu.
Meantime, Bhutan first made an international achievement in badminton at the South Asian Under 21 Regional Badminton Championship 2019 held in the Maldives where the country secured two bronze medals.
