Bhutan to participate in the International Mathematical Olympiad in London
Bhutan will participate in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) 2024 for the first time with five high school students set to represent the nation. IMO is the world’s most prestigious international mathematical tournament which will bring together the brightest young minds from around 150 countries.
The national team includes Tandin Tshering from Yangchenphug Higher Secondary School in Thimphu, Pema Wangyal from Jigme Sherubling Central School in Trashigang, Pema Ugyen Dendup from Druk Gyalpo’s Institute in Paro, Jigme Thinley Choeda from Dechenchholing Higher Secondary School in Thimphu and Sonam Loday from Karmaling Higher Secondary School in Samdrup Jongkhar.
These students were among the top 200 participants of the HRH Gyalsey Annual Mathematics Award 2023 competition. They took the online selection test on January 4 to secure a place among the top 30 students. The selected 30 students then received three weeks of intensive coaching in January at Gelephu conducted by former IMO medalists currently studying at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Following the training, the five best students were chosen to represent Bhutan at the IMO 2024. They attended the final phase of coaching at The Royal Academy in Pangbisa, Paro.
One of the participants, Jigme Thinley Choeda expressed his excitement at competing in such a prestigious event for the first time and is looking forward to meeting fellow students who share his passion for mathematics.
The competition involves teams of up to six contestants aged between 14-18 years old who will face two challenging exams on consecutive days. Each exam lasting 4.5 hours will consist of three problems. The contestants will have the opportunity to earn Gold, Silver and Bronze medals as well as Honourable Mentions for their good efforts.
The event is scheduled for July 15-20 at the University of Bath in London, UK. The team accompanied by an official and two teachers will depart for London on July 13.
IMO is the World Mathematics Championship for high school students held every year in a different country. The first IMO was held in 1959 in Romania with 7 countries participating.
Interacting with the team yesterday, the Hon’ble Lyonpo for Education and Skills Development congratulated the students on being selected to represent Bhutan on a global platform and emphasized the importance of making the best use of this valuable opportunity.
