National School Drama Competition resumes to highlight the literary and dramatic talents of students
Honouring the 34th birth anniversary of Her Majesty The Gyaltsuen, the Ministry of Education and Skills Development re-launched the National School Drama Competition. The event commenced with an inaugural performance of “Episode in the Life of an Author” by the talented students of Motithang Higher Secondary School.
The competition offers a unique platform for higher secondary school students from across Bhutan to display their literary and dramatic skills on a national stage. It aims to enhance their educational experience and foster a sense of community and belonging within schools.
The journey to the national stage began at the Dzongkhag and Thromde levels where 50 outstanding dramas were selected to compete at the national level. The final rounds of the competition are expected to conclude in July.
Each performance with a maximum duration of 90 minutes will feature a classic, contemporary or Bhutanese short play in English. These performances will be evaluated by a panel of three professional judges. The top three dramas will be recognized along with the three best actors for their outstanding contributions.
Addressing the program, the Hon’ble Lyonpo for Education and Skills Development stated, “We are not just celebrating drama as an art form but also recognising its vital role in education and personal development.” She highlighted that drama is more than entertainment; it is a powerful medium for sharing stories, emotions and addressing social issues.
Initially launched in 2017, the competition could not be continued in subsequent years but is now expected to become an annual event starting next year. As a part of its educational reforms, the Ministry is placing greater emphasis on holistic
education, committing to nurturing well-rounded individuals equipped to thrive in the 21st century.
To further support the initiative, the Ministry is working on establishing a premier school for arts and music ensuring that students receive opportunities to excel creatively. The institution will provide a dedicated space for students to hone their talents in various artistic fields including performing arts, visual arts and music.
