Bhutan Celebrates Girls in ICT Day with Innovation and Empowerment
Bhutan embraced the spirit of empowerment and innovation as thirteen groups of women professionals and college students showcased their real-world application projects yesterday in Thimphu to mark Girls in ICT Day. The event was held under the theme of ‘Leadership’ emphasizing the crucial role of strong female role models in STEM careers.
In a display of technological innovation, Sherig AI emerged as the challenge winner followed by Going Beyond Boundaries in second place and Dzongkha Text to Speech securing third place honors. The winners were bestowed with cash prizes ranging from Nu.10,000 to Nu.17,000. Sherig AI, represented by Tsheltrim Pemo impressed the judges with their mission to transform
Bhutanese education through NO LA, an AI tutor designed to offer personalized and dynamic learning experiences. This innovative approach aims to guide students through problem-solving processes systematically paving the way for enhanced educational outcomes.
The competition also witnessed the presentation of various innovative ideas including Artilens, a platform to analyze ancient artifacts; Animal IOT aimed at repelling wild animals, a centralized data hub; Dog Food Donation facilitating stray dog feeding through technology, Zabbix, a monitoring tool for IT infrastructure and Naykap Gokab, a one-stop shop for ideas and innovation etc.
The occasion was graced by the esteemed presence of the Hon’ble Lyonpo for Education and Skills Development and Dasho Secretary of the Government Technology (GovTech) Agency, alongside educators, students and ICT professionals.
Organized by GovTech, the event provided a valuable learning experience particularly for students enabling them to understand the practical benefits of technology in today’s world.
Girls in ICT Day celebrated globally since 2011 has seen the participation of over 377,000 girls and young women in more than 11,400 events across 171 countries. Bhutan’s vibrant celebration adds to this global momentum reaffirming the nation’s dedication to empowering women and promoting innovation in the ICT sector.
