Health Empowerment: Celebrating World Health Day in Samtse
This year, Bhutan observed World Health Day in Samtse with the theme “My Health, My Right,” to empower individuals in embracing healthier lifestyles. The chosen theme underscores the universal right of every individual to access essential health services, education, information, clean water, nutritious food, adequate housing and discrimination-free environments.
To mark the event, a 10 km marathon competition was organized attracting 500 participants including 348 male and 152 female across three categories. The top five runners in each category were awarded attractive prizes and certificates fostering a healthy spirit.
Additionally, health professionals from Samtse Hospital conducted screenings for attendees offering checks for sugar levels, blood pressure and HIV. These screenings aimed to promote early detection and intervention for various health conditions further emphasizing the importance of proactive healthcare measures.
The distinguished presence of the Hon’ble Lyonpo for Education and Skills Development, the Health Dasho Secretary, the WHO Representative to Bhutan along with students, teachers, local leaders, Dzongkhag staff and senior officials added significance to the event.
In her keynote address, Lyonpo highlighted that “Health is not merely the absence of illness but a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being.” She emphasized on recognizing health as a fundamental human right and urged everyone to reaffirm their commitment to this principle.
The WHO Representative shared the global significance of World Health Day and the role each individual plays in maintaining their own health. She spoke about the rising prevalence of non-communicable diseases and the importance of lifestyle changes to prevent their onset. Recognizing the significance of the occasion, the event was strategically held in Samtse to ensure a broader outreach to its diverse population. It was organized jointly by the Ministry of Health, and Samtse Dzongkhag.
World Health Day, celebrated annually on April 7 commemorates the founding anniversary of the World Health Organization in 1948. It serves as a reminder of the collective commitment to prioritize health and well-being for all.
