Orientation programme to enhance National School Curriculum delivery
Out of the 265 candidates selected from the BCSE 2023 in the B.Ed. category for Primary, Secondary and Dzongkha, 166 attended an orientation programme on the National School Curriculum (NSC). The remaining candidates had previously attended the program in 2022 while serving as contract teachers.
The programme was aimed to better equip teachers in effectively delivering the NSC. Introduced in 2021 in response to the pandemic, the NSC focuses on fostering competency development by emphasizing “why and how” rather than “what” in the learning process.
The recruits attended the programme on 21-22 December at Yangchenphug Higher Secondary School in Thimphu. It covered various aspects including the National School Curriculum framework, Competency Based Education (CBE), Competency Based Assessment and learning and teaching approaches and strategies. They also gained insights into the technology in education, designing competency statements and learning objectives, curriculum structure and organization, the purpose of the Instructional Guide and the roles of teachers and students in CBE.
Despite the participants’ four years of rigorous training in the colleges of education, it is crucial for them to understand the purpose and goals of the NSC for its intended implementation.
The Teacher Development Division organized the programme with facilitators from the School Curriculum Division, both offices under the Department of School Education. This collaborative effort aims to ensure that the teachers are well-prepared with the knowledge and skills necessary for successfully integrating the NSC into their teaching practices.
