Towards enhancing the country’s TVET sector
The workforce landscape in Bhutan and worldwide is rapidly evolving, driven by technological advancements, globalization and changing market demands. In order to remain competitive on a global level and attain sustainable economic development, it is crucial to invest in a skilled and future-ready workforce and attract the best talent. Towards this, a conference titled, “Building Bhutan’s Future-Ready Workforce,” was held in Thimphu on September 14 to discuss the way forward for building the country’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).
Officials from the Ministry of Education and Skills Development, the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Employment (MoICE) and Edith Cowan University (ECU), Western Australia gathered to explore the emerging needs of the job market in Bhutan. They discussed innovative strategies and collaborative initiatives aimed at equipping individuals with the skills, knowledge and adaptability necessary to excel in the jobs of the future.
Considering that youths are not showing much interest in the TVET sector, the Director of the Department of Workforce Planning and Skills Development, Norbu Wangchuk shared that the Ministry is embarking on a reform program for Technical and Vocational Education and Training to make this sector an appealing educational and career choice for all. Currently, only those students who couldn’t find alternative opportunities choose to pursue TVET courses.
Professor Steve Chapman, the Vice Chancellor of ECU suggested that Bhutan should transition towards becoming a high-tech economy. He expressed that a technology-driven advanced economy holds the potential to provide a promising sector in Bhutan creating additional employment opportunities in the future while also addressing the growing issue of youth unemployment.
The conference also highlighted the importance of a collaborative approach among universities, industries and government agencies in preparing individuals to thrive in an ever-changing job market. The Ministry, in partnership with MoICE and ECU jointly organized the conference.
