In order to help young people spend their free time meaningfully in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic, the Youth Center Division of the Department of Youth and Sports, Ministry of Education has initiated advanced online classes for youth on coding and programming through Pi-Top, a digital programming computer. Facilitated by professionals from FABLAB Bhutan and youth who have availed the National Training of Trainers (NTOT) workshop on Pi-top, the participants are taught how to use Python, 3-D printing and develop other innovative ideas.
The classes are provided during the weekends through Thimphu Youth Friendly Integrated Service Center which is attached to the Division. The first class was held on 6-7 June, 2020. 24 youth participants are attending the classes in small groups from their respective Youth Friendly Integrated Service Centers (Thimphu, Gelephu, Samdrup Jongkhar and Phuentsholing). Since other Youth Centers do not have Pi-tops, their youth could not be included in this training. It is hoped that through such classes, the participants would not only be able to develop new technological skills and enhance their creativity, but they would also be able to spend their free time productively. This activity is initiated in collaboration with UNICEF and FABLAB Bhutan.
