First Ever STEM festival Held in Bhutan
First-ever STEM Festival held in Thimphu
The first-ever STEM Festival was held at the Coronation Park in Thimphu on 11-12 November coinciding with the birth anniversary of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo.
The festival served as a good platform for youths to showcase their talents and learn through hands-on experience and real-world applications to develop an innovative mind.
During the festival, the schools of Thimphu Dzongkhag and Thromde competed to showcase their technology on the themes “Envirothon” and “Bhutan’s Journey towards ‘Smart City’’. The top three winners were awarded VIVO Smart Phones each and the rest of the participants were awarded certificates.
Agencies including Jigme Namgyel Wangchuck Super FabLab, Druk Green Power Corporation, Department of IT and Telecom (DITT) and Agricultural Machinery Centre also exhibited their innovative technologies.
Further, Do it Yourself (DIY) and STEM games made the festival a fun learning platform for all visitors particularly young children. Other activities such as reward stamps, live music, photo booth and face painting were also organised.
The Hon’ble Sherig Lyonpo, Jai Bir Rai graced the opening ceremony while the Director General of the Department of School Education, Karma Galay graced the closing event.
The festival was organized by the Women in STEM group jointly with the Bhutan National Commission for UNESCO and DITT with fund support from UNESCO.
The Women in STEM group (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) is a voluntary collaboration of Bhutanese women working in STEM-related fields. The group aims to promote girls and women in STEM fields and empower them to contribute towards a sustainable future through STEM education.
The festival is one of the group’s main activities, they also organize Girls STEM Camp, Monthly STEM Quiz and STEM Forum.
