Hon’ble Lyonpo tours Yangchen Gatshel Higher Secondary SchoolOn September 27, the Hon’ble Lyonpo for Education and Skills Development paid a visit to Yangchen Gatshel Higher Secondary School in Chamgang, Thimphu where she highlighted the urgent need for better infrastructure in schools nationwide. In a meeting with the teachers, Lyonpo expressed concern over the lack of proper toilet facilities, sports infrastructure and libraries in the schools she has visited. She emphasised the need to strengthen these facilities as they play a crucial role for the holistic development of students. “Strengthening these areas is a priority for the Ministry,” she said. Lyonpo spoke about the National Teaching Service and Professional Standards for Teachers highlighting the positive impact these initiatives are expected to have on the education sector. Additionally, she shared important discussions from the National Education Conference 2024 including policies on tuition and grade repetition. As a part of the work ethic, Lyonpo encouraged the teachers to prioritise efficiency and fight corruption. She emphasised the vital role teachers play as role models for their students and urged them to lead by example in both their professional and personal conduct. In the 13th five-year plan, Lyonpo reiterated that the Ministry is committed to strengthening the education sector by improving facilities, creating a viable working environment for teachers and enhancing the learning experience for students. The visit also served as an opportunity for Lyonpo to inspect the school campus. She toured the hostel, kitchen, staffroom, classrooms, well-being center and library as well as met with students from the school’s Special Educational Needs (SEN) programme which currently supports 33 students. Lyonpo’s visit provided valuable insights into the school’s management and areas that need improvement to enhance educational opportunities. Established in 1992, the school currently serves 698 students with 318 boys and 380 girls. It has a staff strength of 45 teachers and covers an area of 17.03 acres. Location
